ReConstitution is a live audiovisual remix of the 2008 presidential debates. This hybrid form of video art and performance explores the structure behind the sound and images of the debate. The legibility of the content is preserved, upholding the debates as a vital information source for voters. Every spoken word is indexed and analyzed and then displayed with the converted video signal. The visuals react immediately to the physical movement, tone of their voice and the words they speak. Creating a weave of an exciting and spontaneous AV narrative. The original concept was realized by three artists of media, all MIT graduates, Sosolimited.

• EBay to Be Reduce By What?

  EBay Inc. said on Monday it will reduce about 1,000 employees, plummeting its work force by about 10 percent.

  The online auction site also said it will get rid of several hundred provisional workers and reduce open positions.

  EBay said the reductions would streamline its organization. The company said it expects restructuring charges of about $70 million to $80 million, mostly in the fourth quarter.

  EBay also said its third-quarter earnings would be higher than it predicted in July, although revenue will be at the low end of its expectation. It is scheduled to announce third-quarter results on Oct. 15.

  On July 16 eBay said it expected third-quarter earnings between 30 cents and 32 cents per share, and revenue between $2.1 billion and $2.15 billion.

  EBay also said it will buy online expenses business Bill Me Later for $820 million in cash and $125 million in outstanding options. The company also said it will buy Danish classifieds site dba.dk and vehicles site bilbasen.dk for $390 million in cash.

  “Dance music is Jungle gone mainstream. When Jungle split into Ragga Jungle and drum ‘n’ bass and returned to the undergrounds scene, there were some who wanted to take it to a wider audience. And that meant going live. In 1994, Goldie produced the single ‘Angel’ using samples lifted from David Byrne and Brian Eno, taking Jungle away from hardcore, back more in the direction of Soul. Until that time, Jungle and drum ‘n’ bass had largely been promoted on compilation albums. Goldie produced his own album, Timeless, in 1995. That same year, A Guy Called Gerald released ‘Black Secret Technology’, with a second version in 1997 reaping even more acclaim.”

  By the end of 1996, Dance music is quickly becoming well known, spreading around the world. France took dance to heart, and clubs opened in Switzerland, Germany, Spain and Holland. And then there were breakbeat feasts in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia.  Even advertisers even use dance music to promote drinks and soap.

• Distinguishing Techno

  Techno leaves a percussive feel that is due to its use of percussion. A techno drum patters features “a kick drum sample on beats 1 and 3, a snare-like sound on beats 2 and 4 and a highhat on each upbeat; a kick drum is usually also present on beats 2 and 4.” This pattern is closely similar to that one would hear in hip-hop, but for techno, it is done at a slower tempo. Techno is mainly instrumental, and produced in order to be incorporated into other sets which can be played continuously. “Although several other dance music genres can be described in such terms, techno has a distinct sound that aficionados can pick out very easily.”

  Lounge music is a form of music that was popular during the 1950’s and 1960’s and includes genres like easy listening, exotica, and space age pop. Its characteristic ranges from modern electronica with chillout influences to mellow instrumentals while maintaining its emphasis on space-age elements. It was established in 1999 by A&R man and DJ Mark Doyle and caters to a whole new generation of grown-up clubbers.   Brian Eno is an electronic music artist from the UK who is also known as the father of modern ambient music. With an art school background under his belt, he first rose to prominence during the 1970’s when he became the synth and keyboard player of glam rock band Roxy Music. When he left the band, he made his own rock albums before working on abstract soundscapes and and experimenting with ambient music. Since then he has created a dozen albums and collaborated with similar artists like John Cale and Robert Fripp. Brian Eno has also made musical collaborations with pop artists like David Bowie. He is also credited for introducing chance music to rock and pop.

  Aphex Twin is also known as Richard David James, a British electronic music artist who is considered to be the most influential and inventive of the genre. The name “Aphex Twin” is from a brand of audio signal processing equipment called Aphex Systems Limited and is used with permission as noted on the back sleeve of his Drukqs and Richard D. James albums. The word “twin” was placed in memory of his stillborn brother, who was also named Richard James. Aphex Twin began composing ambient techno music when he was 13 and has over a hundred hours of his early creations. His musical influences are avant garde artists like Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, and John Cage. He lives in Southeast London in a space that used to be the Bank of Cyprus.

  House music is disco music in a more evolved form. It retains the regular, heavy beats of disco but has more electronic elements like synthesized basses and drum machine rhythms. House music is based on songs and draws from a wide number of genres, including jazz, Latin, and reggae.

  House music emerged in clubs in Chicago and Detroit during the early eighties and appealed to the poor, the young, and the gay community. House music can be both instrumental and vocal, though vocal house music is more of a call to dance than containing actual lyrics. For instance, “Everybody Dance Now” by C+C Music Factory is a popular, catchy house tune that doesn’t do more than get people dancing. House became more popular as mainstream artists like Madonna incorporated it in her album, Ray of Light, and gave it a more pop angle.
