With dancing ladies and big trombones, the sound of Balkan Beat Box carries a faint reminder of the day the circus came to town,. But the dancers are belly dancers and the saxophones and brass recalls the Klezmer tradition of going from village to village, in this case, the Booklyn, to weddings and funerals. In this case, the village is Brooklyn.

“The usual images conjured up by the term techno are the frantic beats per minute issued through mega-watt stacks to hoards of sweaty dancers in some iniquitous den on the edge of nowhere.”

Techno is a form of electronic dance music that was developed in Detroit, Michigan, during the mid to late 1980s. Many styles of techno now exist, but Detroit techno, a genre in its own right, is seen as the foundation upon which many other sub genres have been built.

“The roots of Techno can be traced back to the early 1970’s when German Progressive Rock bands such as Can and Tangerine Dream began to substitute traditional instrumentation – guitar, bass and drums – with synthesizers and drum machines.”

“Although raps were often introduced, it was the propulsive rhythmic interface that was the central motif of Techno. It flourished through the raves of the late 1980’s, which invoked memories of the Psychedelic era of the late 1960’s.“

The techno musician treats each machine with the idea of creating a continuous stream of musical patterns which come naturally from them.  “Given the capabilities and limitations of old sequencers, such sequencers encourage the production of repeating 16-step patters with a limited number of instruments being played at once and yet can be arranged at any order.” The techno producer enjoys the freedom to mix and match a combination of sounds which would make it dancefloor-friendly. After collecting patterns, the producer then focuses on creating textures and then achieving a specific musical arrangement either similar or different from others he had already produced.

Techno music is easy to create. It can be created and manipulated using a computer program. But there are particular programs that make it into the A-list for making techno music:

    1. FL STUDIO
    2. REASON
    3. LOGIC
    4. ABLETON

There are many other programs which can be used to manipulate the sounds. It is actually possible to make use of these programs to make techno tracks even without having to have live recordings of instruments. Compared to other traditional genres of music, techno is more complex and makes use of an orchestra of machines to produce the sound track.

So, you want to write your own music huh? Here are some tips to help you turn it on!

First and foremost, think about your audience. Who would they be? Would they be able to relate to your music? You must aim to connect with them emotionally, and you could do this by many ways: powerful lyrics, evocative music, catchy tunes, skilled use of instruments, and many others. In order to do just that, you must practice your technical and artistic skills and keep them at their toes by doing something new every now and then.

Seek inspiration, it’s all around you and deep within you. Listen to others’ songs and learn from them. Stop comparing yourself with other songwriters and create your own style.

For those who aren’t used to dancing to the beat of techno, it may be quite difficult to get the right dance steps going. But that seems to be the other characteristic of techno— that it is must easier to pick out the steps because of the free-going rhythm and continuity from one song to another. Techno is actually perfect for those who just want to relieve stress by dancing, and not really pay attention to the right steps as might be expected in other kinds of dancing styles.

A typical techno production involves a compositional technique which is rooted in a Western music framework. Techno music is usually programmed rhythms and musical phrases that go with different types of signal processing and frequency filtering. Moreover, it does not necessarily make use of traditional methods of composition such as making use of notes, tonality and melody and much less, of accompaniment of vocals. Techno music is known for its rhythm and musical phrases, mostly due to the limitations of devices used to synchronize the sounds. In any case, it is this quality of techno music that makes it popular at clubs, as dance music.
